Gajraj Rao on Indian Cinema's Shift from Item Numbers to Rooted Stories
Veteran actor Gajraj Rao shares insights on the evolution of Indian cinema and how streaming platforms are bringing back simple, relatable storytelling.
Veteran actor Gajraj Rao has spoken about the changes in Indian cinema, highlighting how storytelling has evolved over the years. He shared that filmmakers once assumed that audiences preferred flashy item numbers, which led to limitations in filmmaking. However, he noted that the landscape is now shifting back to more rooted and relatable stories, similar to the works of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee.
Filmmakers Misjudged Audience Preferences
Gajraj Rao reflected on the transformation of Indian cinema, stating that during the 90s and 2000s, filmmakers believed audiences wanted larger-than-life films with extravagant item numbers. This assumption, according to him, resulted in a phase where storytelling became restricted. He explained that while the audience’s taste remained unchanged, the fear of box office performance led filmmakers to prioritize commercial elements over meaningful narratives.

OTT Platforms Bringing Back Simpler Stories
The actor observed that streaming platforms have allowed a revival of lighthearted, relatable content. He pointed out that earlier, OTT platforms focused primarily on crime and violence, but now, shows similar to classic television dramas like Nukkad and Buniyaad are making a comeback. According to him, the diversity of content available on streaming platforms ensures that everyone can find something suited to their preferences.
