Karan Johar Discusses the Importance of Gender Politics in Cinema, Lauds Female-Led Films
Karan Johar emphasizes the rising success of female-led films and the need for sensitive storytelling in Bollywood.
Karan Johar has recently shared his views on gender politics in filmmaking, stating that female-led films are now dominating the box office, outshining some male-led movies. In an interview, the filmmaker revealed that this shift in audience preference is something that cannot be ignored anymore. Films like Stree 2 and Gangubai Kathiawadi, both featuring strong female leads, have garnered impressive box office numbers, and Karan expressed his happiness about this new trend in the industry.

Johar mentioned that when Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, performed well, he considered it a major win for cinema. He highlighted that the film’s success was largely due to Bhatt's powerhouse performance, showing that a woman can indeed carry a film to great heights. He pointed out that it was particularly significant since the film outperformed male-led films, which have traditionally dominated the box office.
In his conversation on Lilly Singh’s podcast, Karan stressed the importance of self-censorship in filmmaking. He said that while cinema is primarily meant to entertain, it should not propagate harmful gender politics or incorrect social norms. According to Karan, filmmakers need to be sensitive to how they represent gender in their stories, as the impact of such portrayals can influence larger social perceptions.

Karan also reflected on how male stars often argue for pay parity, claiming that their star power brings in larger numbers at the box office. However, he noted that the success of female-led films is now challenging this narrative. Women’s movies, according to him, are opening to much higher numbers than some films led by male superstars, further solidifying the need for an equal representation of women in the industry.
As for his own projects, Karan Johar is currently working on Nadaaniyan, a film featuring Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor, which will release directly on Netflix. He is also co-producing Jigra, which starred Alia Bhatt in the lead, though the film didn’t perform well commercially. Nonetheless, Karan Johar remains committed to pushing boundaries in Bollywood with projects that continue to challenge traditional gender roles.
