In an interview with India Today, Shoojit revealed that the guilt of losing Irrfan still lingers with him. He admitted that he had not yet been able to overcome Irrfan's death, describing the overwhelming sense of guilt that takes over, leaving him uncertain about how to resolve it. The director, who had originally envisioned Irrfan for the role in I Want To Talk, acknowledged that the transition had not been easy, despite recognizing the significant contribution Abhishek made to the project.
Despite the passage of time, Shoojit confessed that Irrfan's absence still feels like an open wound, one that no amount of time or explanation can fully heal. He mentioned that Irrfan was irreplaceable, not just in his life but in his work as well. To cope with this, Shoojit has maintained a close bond with Irrfan’s family, especially his son Babil, who will appear in an upcoming project with him.

The director also admitted that the script for I Want To Talk was written with Irrfan in mind, a fact he shared with Abhishek Bachchan during their collaboration. "I told Abhishek that this was a role meant for Irrfan, and that no one could replace him," Shoojit recalled. However, despite the emotional burden, Abhishek has stepped into the role with commitment, delivering a performance that captures a unique purity that Shoojit feels is reminiscent of Irrfan’s special touch, especially in his eyes.
Shoojit’s deep connection with Irrfan’s legacy is evident in his direction of Abhishek, and he is confident that audiences will notice the emotional depth and subtle homage to Irrfan in the final film. He acknowledged that while Abhishek brought something beautiful to the table, no one could truly replace Irrfan.
Alongside Abhishek Bachchan, I Want To Talk features a strong ensemble cast including Pearle Dey, Ahilya Bamroo, Jayant Kripalani, Kristin Goddard, and Johny Lever. With the screenplay penned by Ritesh Shah and produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar, the film is set to be a powerful exploration of loss, love, and redemption.
As Shoojit continues to pour his heart into filmmaking, he shared that the creative process helps him heal. He explained that making films brings calm and a deeper understanding, ultimately making him a better person. With the release date drawing near, the anticipation for I Want To Talk is growing, with audiences eager to see how this poignant, emotionally charged drama will unfold on screen.
