Not so happy

Despite Losses, Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light Shines With Historic Nominations

Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light created history with two Golden Globe nominations but missed out on both awards. Despite the loss, Payal Kapadia celebrated her team's hard work and urged audiences to support the film still playing in theaters.

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards brought a mix of joy and heartbreak for Indian cinema. While Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light created history by becoming the first Indian film to be nominated for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture, it fell short of winning in either of its two categories.

Payal Kapadia’s film lost the prestigious Best Non-English Language Motion Picture award to Emilia Perez. Adding to that, the director missed out on the Best Director award, which went to Brady Corbet for The Brutalist. Despite the setbacks, Kapadia remained composed, graciously applauding other winners during the event.

A Historic Yet Bitter Moment For Indian Cinema

The nominations were a proud milestone for Indian cinema, as Payal Kapadia was also the first Indian director to ever compete for the Best Director title at the Golden Globes. Competing against accomplished filmmakers such as Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), Sean Baker (Anora), and Edward Berger (Conclave), Payal Kapadia faced fierce competition. Social media was flooded with disappointment from fans who believed All We Imagine As Light deserved recognition, with many calling it "robbed."

About All We Imagine As Light

All We Imagine As Light explores the lives of two women navigating their emotional complexities during a trip to a beach town. The film’s nuanced storytelling and performances by actors like Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Anand Sami earned it acclaim. Premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the movie marked a historic moment as the first Indian film in 30 years to compete in Cannes’ main competition.

Reflecting on the loss, Payal Kapadia expressed her gratitude for the recognition, saying that it was a celebration of everyone who had worked passionately on the film. She encouraged audiences in India to watch All We Imagine As Light, noting that it was still playing in theaters and deserved their support.

A Night Of Mixed Feelings

While the night wasn’t victorious for Payal Kapadia, it served as a reminder of India’s growing presence on the global cinematic stage. The previous year, SS Rajamouli’s RRR had won Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu. These moments, though bittersweet, signify a promising future for Indian films at international award shows.
