Sudip Sharma Critiques Glorified Violence In Mainstream Films: "Where Are the Consequences?"
Sudip Sharma, the maker of Paatal Lok, critiques the glamorization of violence in mainstream cinema, urging filmmakers to focus on accountability and systemic causes.
Filmmaker Sudip Sharma, best known for his gripping narratives in NH10, Udta Punjab, Paatal Lok, and Kohrra, has voiced his concerns about the growing trend of glorified violence in mainstream cinema.
Speaking exclusively to OTTplay, Sudip Sharma expressed his discomfort with the normalization of violence that often lacks moral or systemic consequences. The creator of Paatal Lok, which recently premiered its second season on Amazon Prime Video to rave reviews, shared his thoughts on how violence is being portrayed in contemporary films.
He noted that many recent movies focus on protagonists who commit extreme acts of violence, such as entering a hotel and killing numerous people, without any acknowledgment of the role of law enforcement or the repercussions of such actions. Sudip Sharma questioned why such characters are celebrated as heroes and why audiences and creators alike fail to challenge the morality of these depictions.

Sudip explained that in his works, violence is never an end in itself but rather a means to explore deeper societal issues. He highlighted how Paatal Lok and NH10 delve into the causes and consequences of violence, aiming to provoke thought and encourage viewers to examine systemic factors. For him, the focus lies on understanding why individuals resort to violence and how addressing root causes could lead to a better society.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Sudip Sharma shared how growing up in Assam during the 1980s and 1990s gave him firsthand exposure to the profound impact of violence. He emphasized that real-life violence leaves scars, unlike its often-glamorous portrayal in cinema.
While Sudip Sharma refrained from naming specific films, he alluded to popular blockbusters where violence is treated as a spectacle, with protagonists emerging unscathed and unquestioned. He finds this trend troubling and called for a shift in storytelling that prioritizes accountability and introspection over mindless action.
