Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has confirmed that he has left Mumbai and distanced himself from the Bollywood film industry. He stated that he wanted to stay away from film circles as the industry had become "toxic." According to him, the Hindi film industry is only focused on making movies that earn hundreds of crores, which has taken away the joy of filmmaking.

In a recent conversation with The Hindu, Anurag Kashyap shared that he has relocated to South India, likely Bangalore. He expressed his disappointment with Bollywood, saying that filmmakers are only chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make ₹500 crore or ₹800 crore movies, which has led to a decline in creativity. He added that the atmosphere has changed, making it difficult for filmmakers like him to experiment with new ideas.
Earlier, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kashyap mentioned that he was so disheartened by the Hindi film industry that he decided to move to a more stimulating environment in South India. He stated that he admired South Indian filmmakers for their ability to create fresh and experimental cinema. He also mentioned that in Bollywood, producers focus more on profits rather than storytelling, which takes away the essence of filmmaking. He revealed that he could no longer handle the pressure of commercial expectations and that even before a film starts, the discussions revolve around selling it rather than making it.
Despite his decision to leave Mumbai, Kashyap remains active in the film industry. He is currently promoting Footage, a Malayalam film directed by Saiju Sreedharan, which he has presented. The movie features Manju Warrier, along with Vishak Nair and Gayathri Ashok. While it was released last year in Malayalam, its Hindi version is set to release on March 7, 2025.
Additionally, he will be seen playing a fearless cop in the upcoming bilingual film Dacoit, which is being shot in both Hindi and Telugu. The movie stars Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles. The release date of the film has not been announced yet.
