India Will Go 'Ballistic!’: Aamir Khan On Laapataa Ladies Winning An Oscar

Aamir Khan recently shared his thoughts on Laapataa Ladies, India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category. In an interview, Aamir emphasized how winning the prestigious Academy Award would mean a lot to the country.

Speaking to BBC News India, the actor mentioned that while he personally doesn’t view competitions too seriously, an Oscar win would be a huge milestone. According to Aamir, such recognition not only honors the film but also puts it on a global stage, sparking interest from worldwide audiences eager to understand what sets the film apart.  

Aamir Khan further highlighted how Indians, passionate about cinema, have long desired an Oscar for an Indian film. If Laapataa Ladies were to win, he said the country would go “ballistic,” celebrating the victory overwhelmingly. He added that the joy it would bring to Indian audiences would be unmatched, as it’s a dream the nation has been chasing for years.

So far, only three Indian films including Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan have earned nominations in the Best International Feature Film category but fell short of a win. In recent years, RRR and The Elephant Whisperers have achieved victories in other categories, with RRR winning Best Original Song and The Elephant Whisperers taking home Best Documentary Short.

The Oscar shortlist for 2025 will be announced on Tuesday, December 17, and hopes remain high for Laapataa Ladies. On the work front, Aamir Khan is gearing up for his next release, Sitaare Zameen Par, set for 2025. He is also producing Lahore 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and featuring Sunny Deol.
