Passion For Storytelling
Speaking to PTI, Mohanlal shared that his decision to direct was not a pre-planned move but rather a natural outcome of his passion for storytelling. He explained that after years of being part of Indian cinema, telling stories that have touched audiences, he felt the urge to offer something back.
Mohanlal mentioned that when he first heard the story of Barroz, he found it to be very unique. He then thought about producing the film but was unsure about who would direct it. Eventually, he realized that he could offer something special from his heart to the audience by taking on the role of the director himself.

The Making Of Barroz - A Fantasy Adventure
Barroz is based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel, Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure, where Mohanlal stars in the title role as Barroz, a loyal servant who has guarded Vasco da Gama’s treasure for 400 years. The film, shot in 3D, is intended to ignite the imaginations of both children and adults. The actor-turned-director wanted the story to inspire wonder and nostalgia. Mohanlal noted that Barroz was unique not just in its story but also in its execution, particularly because of the challenges of shooting in 3D.
“We had to deal with special cameras, shot divisions, and colors. Everything had to be carefully planned because the 3D format is different from traditional filmmaking,” he shared. Despite his extensive experience in front of the camera, he emphasized that Barroz was his own creative vision, not inspired by any of the directors he had worked with previously.

A New Era For Malayalam Cinema
Mohanlal also reflected on the growing reach of the Malayalam film industry. He acknowledged that while the industry has traditionally catered to a local audience, it has now expanded to a pan-India scale. “Our industry has grown, and we now have pan-India actors in our films. We have many new directors with fresh perspectives,” he said.
Barroz signifies a step forward for both Mohanlal and Malayalam cinema, blending ambition with imagination in a way that could resonate with audiences worldwide. For the actor, this directorial journey is more than just about filmmaking; it’s a personal gift to the fans who have supported him throughout his career.
