Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has confirmed that Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao will portray him in an upcoming biopic. The film, based on Ganguly’s life and cricketing journey, will depict his rise as one of India’s most influential cricket captains.
Speaking to the media in West Bengal’s Bardhaman, Ganguly shared that Rao had been chosen for the role. However, he mentioned that due to scheduling conflicts, the project could take over a year before it reaches theatres.

Ganguly’s Legacy in Cricket
Sourav Ganguly, famously known as the "Prince of Kolkata," played a significant role in shaping Indian cricket's legacy. Over his career, he participated in 113 Test matches and 311 One-Day Internationals, scoring a total of 18,575 international runs. As captain, he led India to 21 Test victories and took the team to the 2003 World Cup final. After retiring in 2008, he continued his contribution to the sport by serving as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and later as the president of the BCCI.
Rajkummar Rao’s Upcoming Projects
Apart from the biopic, Rajkummar Rao is set to appear in Bhool Chuk Maaf, a Maddock Films production featuring Wamiqa Gabbi. The recently released teaser hints at a time-loop storyline where the same day keeps repeating, creating comedic confusion. Additionally, Rao will be seen in Maalik, produced by Kumar Taurani and Jay Shewakramani, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 20, 2025.
