Filmmaker Karan Johar recently shared his thoughts on Kesari Chapter 2, an upcoming historical drama starring Akshay Kumar, Ananya Panday, and R. Madhavan. He described the film as one of the best projects produced under his banner and expressed his excitement for its release.
In an interview with Komal Nahta for Game Changers, Karan was asked about historical events he would like to adapt into a war film. He mentioned the Jallianwala Bagh incident and revealed that he was already producing a film on C. Sankaran Nair, a man who legally challenged British rule.
Karan explained that Sankaran Nair had fought against the British in court, opposing Colonel Dyer’s claim that the Jallianwala Bagh massacre was an act of self-defense. He called the justification appalling and praised the courage of Nair, whose story the film brings to light.
The filmmaker confirmed that the movie is directed by Karan Tyagi and features Akshay Kumar in the lead role. He expressed his pride in the project, stating that he eagerly awaits its release.
When asked about directing a war film himself, Karan said he would like to create a love story set during the partition era.
The film was officially announced in 2024, with a note highlighting its focus on the "shocking cover-up of a massacre" and Sankaran Nair’s legal battle against the British Empire. The film is based on the book The Case That Shook The Empire, written by Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat.
Backed by Dharma Productions, Cape of Good Films, and Leo Media Collective, Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 18, 2025.
